“Matching countertops and islands create a unified look, which some of my clients prefer,” says Nick Chatzigeorgiakis, interior designer and founder of Intrabuild.

“In my experience, cohesive yet vibrant kitchens, where the counters and island complement the overall design, are the most appealing,” says Nick, “but cohesiveness can also create a sophisticated and elegant feel, depending on your preference.”

“For example, choose polished countertops and matte for the island, or choose rounded edges for the counters and rounded edges for the island,” suggests Bob Berriz, interior designer and founder of Berriz Design. “A subtle contrast creates rhythm while still unifying the space.”
