For a family that loves to entertain, building their Bakersfield, California, home from the ground up offered an opportunity to customize everything in the kitchen. Because the space serves as the focal point where the two wings of their nearly 12,000-square-foot contemporary single-story home intersect, the room needed to do it all and then some. “They have three kids and wanted the house to be a hangout spot,” says designer Lindy Galloway.
Mission accomplished, thanks to a cleverly zoned layout. Two island areas, one in Calacatta Borghini marble, the other in black powder-coated metal, provide ample space for cooking and casual dining. Secondary spaces like a butler space and walk-in pantry keep the main kitchen organized. When hanging out together during the day, a breakfast nook creates an intimate atmosphere with serene views of the backyard. In the evening, a hotel-lobby-inspired wet bar sets the tone for pre-dinner get-togethers.
Amid this active atmosphere, a mix of materials in a neutral color palette keeps the feel calm and cohesive. Stained white oak cabinets and warm white walls contrast with matte black accents. Thoughtful design details also help minimize clutter. Specifically, the spice cabinet next to the plaster range hood “has reed-glass doors that are designed to recess behind the range backsplash,” Galloway explains.

“They wanted the foundational elements and finishes to be very neutral and subdued,” Galloway says of the homeowners. A black powder-coated metal waterfall balances the light oak and marble.
