Sadie Sink was thrilled to appear in the 10-minute version of Taylor Swift's “All Too Well” music video, but was surprised when a key scene made it into the final cut.
In an interview with Bastl, Stranger Things Sink said he didn't expect the kitchen argument scene to remain in the 2021 video because it was heavily improvised and hastily filmed. “When she said she was leaving that scene in, I was like, 'What are you talking about?'” Sink recalled. “It was completely improvised, I don't remember anything I said. There was only one take.”
The actress said she thought the fight scenes would simply be silent footage to accompany the song: “I remember they put microphones on us, and I thought, 'Why are they making us put microphones on?' I thought they were just going to film our mouths moving, to give the impression of a fight in the kitchen.” [with music playing over it]”I just did whatever came to mind in the moment. It was a crazy, fun acting game, and it just so happened to be the one that made it into the final version.”
Sink said she appreciated the realism that the improvisational techniques fostered. “What's so cool and real about this is that a fight doesn't have to be completely well thought out. You might say the same thing over and over, but it's real and it's natural,” she opined. “You don't see a lot of natural dialogue in movies, so the fact that she gave us the room to improvise and interact as if we were actually fighting with our partners was really helpful to the song and the story.”
In the video, Sink plays a young woman in a tumultuous relationship with an older man, played by Dylan O'Brien, and the dynamic between the two characters mirrors the lyrics of a Swift song that was originally released as a short five-minute version on her 2012 album, “Swift.” red There are also rumors of a brief romance with Jake Gyllenhaal. At the end of the video, Swift plays an older version of Sink's character, who apparently describes the couple's relationship as ” Everything is too good.
Sink also explained that he was surprised he caught Swift's eye in the first place. “I was super confused at first because I never thought I'd be the kind of person who would make it to her desk,” Sink said. “But I grew up on her music and I'm a fan of hers. She's a big part of my life. When I hear her songs and they remind me of characters, I use them to get into the role. She's always been this little voice in my head, so it was very surreal.”

Sync loved the original version of “All Too Well,” so it was easy for him to tune into the music video. [Swift] “She has a Spider-Man kind of sense and she can immediately tell when someone understands the challenge, because I knew the song so well and I knew the history behind the song,” she says. “It was amazing for her to see that in me and realize that I could understand the song, the message, the story that she was trying to tell.”
“She saw that and immediately made a suggestion to me without having met me beforehand. She has really good instincts,” Sink continued.
