Prime Day is tough for warehouse workers, Part 3
Recent reports have shown that Amazon warehouses are understaffed during busy periods like Prime Day and holidays, making these times especially dangerous for employees.
Workers are pressured to speed up and work longer hours, sometimes ignoring safety protocols.
For example, one worker told Senate investigators how his facility omitted a safety feature on a new conveyor belt to save time.
According to CBS News, without the automatic stop mechanism, heavy loads up to 50 pounds could fall or get stuck, posing a risk of injury.
'Incredibly dangerous working conditions' increase risk
Sanders criticised the findings, telling CBS News: “The incredibly unsafe working conditions at Amazon revealed in this investigation are a perfect example of the corporate greed that the American people are fed up with.”
The report, based on Amazon's internal data, found that when accounting for unreported incidents not disclosed to OSHA, the overall injury rate on Prime Day in 2019 was closer to 45 per 100 workers.
A spokesman for Sanders clarified that the committee's investigation focused on data provided by Amazon for 2019 and 2020.
Report says Prime Day will be tough for warehouse workers
Amazon's annual Prime Day kicked off this Tuesday, luring members with enticing deals while also generating huge revenue for the retail giant.
But as CBS reported, a new congressional report reveals worrying trends among Amazon warehouse workers during this time.
A study released by Senator Bernie Sanders, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, found that Amazon warehouse workers are more than twice as likely to be injured than the industry average.
The reported injury rate during Prime Day 2019 was more than 10 per 100 workers, and the actual rate is likely even higher when unreported accidents are taken into account.
