Home cooks know how important their kitchen equipment is. Seamless kitchen appliances, a full set of cookware, and the right set of dinnerware can make or break a cooking space. But we believe that kitchen paint color is just as important as the tools you use in your kitchen. Color affects your mood, so it's crucial that your kitchen walls contribute to an enjoyable atmosphere.
Padma Lakshmi, master chef; Taste the countrychose light blue, an ever-popular yet timeless color, for her kitchen. In a video posted to her Instagram page, Lakshmi's robin-egg blue walls are juxtaposed with metallic hanging pots and pans and wooden countertops.
Despite not strictly being a neutral colour, decorating with blue is an incredibly versatile decor technique that can be used everywhere from bathrooms to bedrooms. Blue's calming, cooling properties mean it takes the thinking out of the equation. We spoke to the experts to find out how and why blue works particularly well in the kitchen, as Lakshmi attests.
“Blue paint in the kitchen induces calm and creates an inviting environment where culinary creativity can flourish,” says designer Nina Lichtenstein. “Light blues reminiscent of the sky and sea infuse the kitchen with a sense of serenity, making it the perfect place to unwind while you cook or enjoy a leisurely breakfast. These hues promote relaxation and clarity, focusing the mind on food preparation and the joys of family gatherings.”
While Lakshmi chose a light blue for her kitchen, Lichtenstein recommends darker hues for those wanting to create a bolder feel in their kitchen.
“Darker blues like navy and indigo offer depth and more sophistication,” she says. “These rich tones evoke feelings of stability and trust, giving the space a sense of stability while still maintaining a cozy feel. A navy accent wall or dark blue cabinets can create a striking focal point, highlight architectural features in the kitchen, and add intrigue and drama.”
When it comes to materials that go well with blue, Lakshmi has perfectly achieved the basic combination of blue and wood: the softness of the blue contrasts beautifully with the natural, robustness of wood.
“The versatility of blue lies in how it pairs well with a wide range of materials and finishes,” says Lichtenstein. “Combining blue walls and cabinets with natural elements like wood or stone can create a harmonious blend of modern and rustic aesthetics. For example, placing dark wood countertops against pale blue walls creates a stunning contrast, allowing the natural textures and colors to shine.”
Instead of dark wood, Lichtenstein goes in the opposite direction and suggests an option for an even lighter shade to counter blue.
“Incorporating blue into an all-white kitchen can add a pop of color without overwhelming the room,” she says. “For example, you could have a blue tile backsplash or a blue island surrounded by white cabinets. This approach will add visual interest and personality while keeping the kitchen light.”

We love choosing blue as a kitchen colour, especially when it's contrasted with an unexpected wall colour, like Lakshmi's chestnut cabinets. Try incorporating blue into different materials in your kitchen, like a light blue kettle or blue and white ceramics, which look great behind glass-front cabinets.
