Rep. Mike Thompson announced Thursday that Yolo County Meals on Wheels has secured $275,000 in community project funding to add a second kitchen to the Sutter Health Senior Nutrition Center in Winters and expand production of meals for seniors.
“The seniors in our community deserve nutritious meals every day,” Thompson said in a statement. “I'm grateful to local Yolo County officials for recognizing the need for these funds.”
Joy Cohan, executive director of Yolo County Meals on Wheels, said the team is grateful and honored to have received the funding.
“Expanding the Meals on Wheels Sutter Health Senior Nutrition Center in Winters to include a second food preparation area will not only potentially nourish the thousands of seniors still waiting for nutrition assistance in Yolo County, but it will also allow us to do so more cost-effectively. We are extremely grateful to the Congressman and his staff for seeing the wisdom of this approach and offering their support.”
Cohan argued that having two kitchens “coexist” in one space can stretch your budget in the long run.
According to a press release from Thompson, he requested funding for the project through Congress' Community Projects Funding process. His request was included in the Fiscal Year 2025 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations bill, which passed out of committee last week.
The announcement added that the bill has passed both houses of Congress and is expected to be signed into law later this year.
“To date, Thompson has secured funding totaling $2.1 million for three CPF requests submitted on behalf of Yolo County, securing a total of $15.3 million for projects throughout California's Fourth District through 2025.”
