Designing a timeless kitchen requires a careful balance of functionality and classic style in every detail, from the cabinets and countertops to the hardware and décor. But what is the most timeless kitchen hardware? While enduring cabinet designs are easy to find, those small finishes are just as important.
It's no secret that the kitchen is one of the biggest investments you make in your home, so it's important to consider timeless kitchen design elements to ensure your kitchen design will never go out of style. While color, cabinets, and countertops are key to the design, the hardware you choose is just as important.
So what is the most timeless kitchen hardware? From style to finish color, we asked interior designers how they use hardware to add lasting appeal to their kitchen schemes and curate designs that will never go out of style.
What is the most timeless piece of kitchen hardware?
Choosing timeless kitchen hardware requires two elements: style and finish. Choose the right combination and you'll have hardware that feels ever-stylish and a kitchen that will always look luxurious.
“When we think of timeless kitchen hardware, we think of European kitchens. We love heavy brass round knobs and cup handles. We love all things classic, and the simple shapes of both stand the test of time,” says interior designer Tama Bell.
Simplicity is key when choosing a timeless hardware style. Something too fancy or detailed is not only impractical, but it often results in designs that quickly become outdated kitchen hardware trends. Plus, simpler designs can be adapted to a variety of interior design styles.
“We believe that traditional pulls and knobs are the most timeless style of kitchen hardware, with their classic design fitting seamlessly into a variety of kitchen aesthetics and remaining stylish through various kitchen trends,” say Kailee Blalock and Taylor Troia, co-founders and principal designers at House of Hive Design Co.
These simple, timeless designs also offer more opportunity to personalize your scheme. “Adding a backplate to these traditional styles can also spice up the look while maintaining a timeless appeal,” they add.
And when it comes to the most timeless kitchen hardware finishes, warm metals seem to reign supreme: “We love using bronze or antique brass because it adds warmth to a room and gives the space a jewelry-like feel,” says Tama.
But if gold tones aren't your thing, opting for typically cool-toned metals in warmer finishes is a great compromise, evoking a timeless, classic vibe. “We think polished nickel is the most timeless finish, and its warm silver hue makes it versatile as it can be paired with other finishes like brass and iron,” say Kylie and Taylor.
Or, for a more interesting design (guaranteed timeless appeal), mixing finishes with these simple styles will add interest to your kitchen. “Combining finishes like polished nickel for cabinet pulls and knobs and brass or iron for light fixtures and faucets will create a balanced, enduring look.”
Choosing a finish will of course depend on your personal taste and the aesthetic of your kitchen, but whether you prefer nickel or brass, designers recommend going for a distressed look, which will instantly add a timeless look.
“When it comes to door handles, hinges and faucets, vintage and distressed metals such as polished brass and gold are gaining attention, imbuing both traditional and contemporary cabinetry with timeless charm and character,” says kitchen designer Tom Howley.
What's the secret to timeless kitchen hardware? It's the fact that simple designs in vintage or distressed finishes transcend trends, and these hues complement almost any color scheme. “Ultimately, you want your finish to be as versatile and durable as possible so it can stand the test of time and complement any color scheme in your kitchen,” says Alexander Shepel, founder of SHEPEL.
“Over the years, you may want to change the colour of your cabinets or change your lighting, so these finishes need to blend seamlessly into any design. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and in a bustling family home, these small elements need to last.”
