Chapel Hill's Mama Dip's Kitchen closes after 48 years in business

Chapel Hill, North Carolina — A popular restaurant that has been a fixture on the Chapel Hill dining scene for 48 years is closing.

The owners of Mama Dip's Kitchen announced Monday that the restaurant will close on Aug. 17.

In a Facebook post, the owners said the closure was to prepare for the next phase of their business and that “this is not goodbye.”

“We can't wait to meet you on our next adventure,” the owner wrote.

Mama Dip was the nickname of Mildred Council, who died in 2018 at age 89. The Chatham County native opened the restaurant in November 1976 and garnered a following, even selling a cookbook on QVC. Her three daughters also contributed to the restaurant's success.

Since opening, Mama Dips has been named to numerous “best” lists, including The Daily Meal's “Best Fried Chicken in America” ​​and Culture Trip's “Top 12 Places for Soul Food in the Southern States.” The restaurant has also been a favorite haunt for celebrities, including Michael Jordan, former University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith, and tennis star Venus Williams.

April 2023, WRAL has learned the owners are considering selling the restaurant. Council's daughter and co-owner, Spring Council, said at the time that challenges in the restaurant industry and the impending retirement of all three owners led them to reconsider their plans. The location was listed for sale on a commercial real estate website for $3.6 million. The current location on Rosemary Street was built in 1998 and opened in 1999. Spring said the ongoing redevelopment around the restaurant was not a deciding factor.

Spring said his goal is to reopen as a fast-casual or take-out restaurant elsewhere in Chapel Hill and to franchise the Mama Dips brand to add more locations.
