I never thought an electric can opener would be something that would excite me. The only one I had in my kitchen was a very old (you could almost call it vintage now) manual can opener, and every can I bought had a ring that you pulled to open it, so that one got little use.
But the crux of my problem is that I have severe carpal tunnel syndrome. Really On my worst days, I can't even clench my fist or grip my utensils properly, so having a device that does all the work for me without me having to grit my teeth and endure the pain and discomfort is my little lifesaver: the Kitchen Mama Orbit One Electric Can Opener.
Kitchen Mama Orbit One Electric Can Opener
When the brand sent me the Orbit One to try, I was honestly a little intimidated. I'd never used an electric can opener before, and the fact that it had an extra part made it seem like I was in for a complicated problem, but I later realized it was the solution. The set comes with a charging cable, a flathead screwdriver, a cylinder blade, and a triangular blade (this is the default attachment). The cylinder blade is for cans 96 oz or larger, and the triangular blade is for standard size and soda cans.
The gadget itself is very easy to use: place Orbit One over a can, align the blade with the edge of the lid, and press the button on top to start it. The blade then moves along the grooves in the lid, creating a clean edge that's not sharp. It takes about 30 seconds to cut around a standard can, and the gadget automatically stops when it's done. For a 96-ounce can, like a tomato sauce can I use to make a large batch of marinara sauce, it takes just over a minute to cut the lid.
While it makes opening canned foods a breeze (beans, corn, Spam, tuna, etc.), I actually use it most for my afternoon treat: a cold can of Coca-Cola Zero. Why? Fewer dishes to wash, and your drink stays cold from the original can. Add ice directly into your new cup, insert a glass straw, add some lemon if you're feeling fancy, and you've got the perfect afternoon pick-me-up.
Being hands-free is a game changer in itself, but what I especially love is the all-new can opener that cuts all the way around the outside of the can, not just the inside of the lid. The included blade is designed to fit snugly around the bottom edge of the lid, so you'll never end up with a lid that's smaller than the actual circumference of the can, meaning the detached lid will never fall or tip into the can. This is a small detail that's a big win for me.
No more using a butter knife to lift super flat rings on cans, no more straining bad wrists to open lids or cutting your hands on sharp edges, just an easy, stress-free can opening experience. It works so well and smoothly that even my mom (who likes to do all her cooking the old fashioned way) loves it.
We can't recommend the new Kitchen Mama can opener enough, but the brand is already popular with shoppers for other versions and designs of can openers and kitchen gadgets, one of which has over 70,000 five-star reviews.
