Gaggenau is now known worldwide as a luxury home appliance brand, but it has come a long way from its beginnings some 350 years ago as a hammer mill and nail forge in Germany's Black Forest. Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm von Baden started business in Gaggenau in 1683 to provide a better life for the local population, who were traditionally farmers.
The company later specialized in enameling, making advertising signs and then transitioned to kitchen appliances, and the company says that same enameling tradition can still be seen inside its iconic blue ovens today.
In the early 1900s the company began producing coal and gas fired stoves which became its main product, electric stoves were introduced in the 1930s, followed by the first built-in eye level ovens and separate cooktops and ventilation in the 1950s.
In 1972, Gaggenau introduced the Vario system cooktop collection, aiming to offer home chefs a more bespoke cooking experience.
The evolution of customized cooking experiences continues: In 2021, Gaggenau introduced the Vario 400 Series, which lets homeowners configure their cooktop just the way they want it, right down to the color of the control knobs. It's part of the company's 400 Series, which allows for flexible installation on islands or along walls.
This year, the company introduced a new range of fridge/freezers that combine furniture-like design with functionality, adaptive lighting and a professional-grade freshness-keeping system.
