A new eatery serving up hard-to-find Chicago-style classics has opened in Hearst: Called Fry's Kitchen, the family-run operation quietly opened in late July at 401 W. Bedford Euless Rd., in the former location of the similarly themed E&B Chicago Eats.
Fry's Kitchen is run by Ruby Ramsey and her husband, Kyle Betts, who moved to Texas from Chicago in 2011. They initially dreamed of opening an event space because they love entertaining guests, but fate took a turn when the owners of E&B Chicago Eats offered to sell the restaurant.
“We used to go there, and the owner contacted me and said, 'I know you and your husband love to cook,'” Ramsay said. “We were intrigued, and it just took off from there.”
They serve Chicago-style fare like pizza puffs, polish, Italian beef, wings, and gyros, and are extremely popular among Chicagoans who have relocated to DFW (they even have their own Facebook page).
While some newcomers like Portillo's offer Italian beef sandwiches, not many DFW restaurants offer pizza puffs, a Chicago staple described as giant deep-fried pizza rolls.
“Pizza puffs are a rare find in the Dallas area,” Ramsey said. “I know people who come in and try the pizza puffs and say they're amazing. They're like a giant pizza roll.”
But Fry's claim to fame is its nachos, which they offer nine different kinds with toppings like steak, brisket and jerk chicken.
“Nachos are our specialty, and we serve them on tortilla chips or Doritos with a variety of toppings to suit your tastes,” Ramsay says. “And they're not tiny, they're just the right size.”
Other menu items include a fun American-Mediterranean fusion gyro cheeseburger, a gyro sandwich, and peach cobbler for dessert, with prices ranging from $8 for cheese-only nachos to $68 for a large party-size basket of wings.
This is the couple's first restaurant, but it's already attracting Chicago cuisine enthusiasts and diners. This comment is typical: “I've lived in Texas for eight years and have tried many different Chicago-style restaurants here, but this place really gives you the taste of Chicago. It's amazing!” We couldn't ask for a higher compliment.
