ASHLAND, Ky. — “You never know what you're going to find here,” said a woman who stopped to glance at different items on her way out of the register.
It's a common experience for customers at Second Hand Rose furniture and home decor store, located at 3205 13th St.
Matt Perkins, the company's CEO, said the company will likely have twice the space in its current building, which it purchased from the YWCA to open its store 25 years ago.
The store is one of three in Ashland, which also includes a clothing store (2284 Carter Avenue) and a children's store (925 Winchester Avenue).
said furniture store manager Betty Hinkle.
“It’s all consignment,” she said. “The consignor gets 40 percent and the store gets 60 percent.”
She said they offer a wide variety of items, including dressers, chairs, and the most popular items, sofas and dining sets.
“And then we start for Halloween and Christmas,” she said.
Perkins said it's a family-owned business that was started by Bea Sloan as a standalone store in the 1950s.
The property was purchased by parents Sam and Anne Perkins in 1999, and following suggestions from many customers, they added a furniture store and, 15 years ago, a children's store.
For 70 years, Second Hand Rose has sold to more than 33,000 customers from all over the Tri-State, Perkins said.
He says there are a lot of “nice finds” for people who want to do some DIY work on their wooden furniture, and they also offer chalk paint.
When asked about unusual finds, Perkins said he recently found some collectible furniture worth $50,000.
He recalls one time a consignor showed up with an unexpected find. It was a miniature Pablo Picasso painting given to a woman by a business executive.
“I told them, 'I'd love to sell it, but I want you to take it to Sotheby's,'” Perkins said.
The store sells products quickly, and the products are popular not only with customers who want to sell them, but also with customers.
“Every time they come here, it’s different,” he said.
Perkins said the stores also offer loyalty cards with discounts for frequent shoppers. This saved customers “hundreds of dollars,” he said.
Thousands of dollars. ”
“Our reputation is very strong and we are honored to serve the community,” he said.
Second Hand Rose stores are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
