Certain designs defy the constant cycle of interior design trends to be timeless and impress homeowners in any season. Shaker kitchens may be the most obvious example.
You can't help but love Shaker kitchens, which feature a transitional style that combines the best of classic and contemporary. A kitchen style that combines rustic charm with clean, defined features has proven to be a standby.
deVOL's signature design line, Real Shaker Kitchens, embodies the flagship style and showcases a wide range of Shaker-style spaces that are sure to stand the test of time. From dark-hued kitchens to pared-down, neutral havens, there's something for everyone in our collection.
We spoke to Helen Parker, creative director at deVOL, to get her take on the brand's beloved kitchens. She also talks about why shaker kitchens remain so popular and why she believes shaker kitchens will never go out of style. Here's what she had to say:
Helen is the Creative Director of deVOL, a leading kitchen design company that combines classic and contemporary. Helen has been the company's creative director since 2011 and is passionate about deVOL's signature understated approach to kitchen design.
What is a shaker kitchen?
Traditional Shaker craftsmanship dating back to 18th century England is built to last. Function is paramount, so the design is simple and pared-back, with no over-the-top decorations, something that modern Shaker kitchens follow. “Shakers are simple, unadorned pieces of furniture that are more about practicality than decoration,” says Helen.
When we describe a kitchen as a shaker, we are primarily referring to cabinets made using the shaker method, with durability as the top priority.
“The best part about these cupboards is that they are very well made and built to last. You can always keep it looking its best even if you only use it,” adds Helen.
Beyond construction, Shaker kitchens offer a distinctive aesthetic style that can be customized to fit any home. Although colorful, like deVOL's Pink & Blue Room and Oxfordshire Farmstead projects, these kitchens are neither bright nor overwhelming.
“The color of your Shaker kitchen and cupboards is very important. It needs to be calm and subtle.” Hardware and worktops should be natural, with gentle contrasts to create a sense of calm. The cupboard design is simple and proportionate, the interior is simple and everything is beautifully rustic and traditional,” says Helen.
What makes shaker kitchens timeless?
Shaker style relies on unadorned fixtures and streamlined design, so it doesn't need to adapt to the times or current kitchen trends, and is already well-suited to modern times. Helen suggests choosing a shaker kitchen if you don't want to redesign when the latest trends inevitably wash away.
“The lack of decorative features means there is nothing outdated or timeless in a Shaker kitchen; its pure simplicity, clean lines, and simple look , making it the perfect option for anyone looking for a timeless, enduring product, “or trend,'' she says.
Helen loves the “style and simplicity” of deVOL's kitchen designs, as well as their versatility. They're all “classic and no-frills,” but each one complements the homeowner's personality, she added.
“Some people add more decor to their rooms, while others keep their kitchen color palette calm and understated. That's the advantage of Shaker, you can start with a really high-quality product and decorate it however you want. ” says Helen.
deVOL's Stepney townhouse project, pictured above, is one of Helen's favorites for its “peaceful feel” despite its basement location on a busy street.
“The contrast is amazing and you can see how the design of the kitchen can change the mood,” she says of the kitchen.
The Pink & Blue Room (pictured above) in deVOL's bath showroom is another one of Helen's favorite Shaker-style renditions.
“It embraces the Georgian proportions of the room and fits so beautifully into a property of that style, and thanks to its color and the original character of the room, it feels very grand and authentic,” she says. says.
Why are shaker kitchens so popular now?
Helen says shaker kitchens have never gone out of style and for good reason, but their current popularity goes beyond interior design trends to make their space their own. I believe it comes from the homeowner's desire to. Shaker kitchens allow you to “create your own look” within a very simple formula: a recipe for a successful design scheme.
“We love that it has the ability to change its appearance depending on the environment, making it an easy and perfect choice for almost any type of property or location.” Shaker cupboards are perfect for creating your own look I think that's a good starting point. Because there are no strong design features, just a very reliable classic base to add your own personality to,” says Helen.
How to bring the latest from Shaker to your kitchen
If you like the look of a Shaker but aren't ready for a complete makeover, Helen suggests choosing Shaker peg rails for kitchen storage. “Easy and ubiquitous Shaker details always feel authentic,” she says.
“Repainting your wooden cupboards a soft shaker color will instantly update your kitchen, and you can also install subtle, simple hardware,” she says.
And Shaker thinking extends beyond furniture, Helen added. She suggests keeping accessories and kitchen utensils “practical and understated,” and using vintage wooden cutting boards or large serving plates to enhance the shaker vibe.
“Getting rid of gadgets and clutter is a simple but very refreshing kitchen update. Shaker people were frugal and only had what they needed. This philosophy is a really good idea. It's essential for achieving Shaker style and for your health,” says Helen.
It's no surprise that shaker kitchens have remained popular for decades. The simple design makes it perfect for this hard-working, long-lasting space. It's the perfect backdrop to incorporate different styles and change your décor as your tastes change, all without touching your timeless cabinetry.
