A couple saved over £13,000 by renovating their kitchen themselves.
And they did it by learning DIY tips and tricks on social media.
Jess and Conor, both 29, from Gateshead, were estimated to have renovated their kitchen at a cost of £15,000. But they stopped paying high fees to do the work themselves.
To that end, the wise duo turned to TikTok, YouTube, and Pinterest for inspiration on how to tackle mods without outside help.
They have now spent just over £1,500, including some new appliances, renovating the room at a fraction of the price.
“Initially, we didn't intend to run the kitchen ourselves,” said Jess, who did not want to share her last name.
“When I bought this house, I always said the kitchen would be the first 'big job' I would do because I always hated how bland and cold the kitchen was.”
“After getting quotes from three or four different places, all around £15,000, we decided we couldn't justify the cost for such a small space and decided to try it ourselves. did.
“After spending a lot of time on Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube, we decided to just do it.”
The old kitchen was decorated with bland white cabinets, gray tile floors, and outdated silver hardware.
To update the room, the couple installed a new fridge (they bought a second-hand Smeg fridge for £430) and a worktop from IKEA.
We also added new solid oak flooring, purchased from B&Q, and a black sink, purchased from IKEA.
Next, we overhauled the cupboards and painted them a trendy forest green, and refreshed the tiles with antique white tile paint.
To complete the look, we added gold hardware, including a Wodar hot water faucet, to complement the green cupboards.
“I think the whole kitchen has changed a lot, but I think what made the most difference was actually the cheapest thing we could do,” Jess explained.
“Painting both the kitchen tiles and cupboards completely changed the look of this space.
“Even something as simple as replacing a chrome handle with brass added something special.
“My biggest tip is to spend time figuring out exactly what you want from a space before you start.
“This is a tedious and time-consuming task, so having a clear vision helped us speed up the process.
“Also, be sure to take your time with the prep work. This is potentially the worst part, but it makes a huge difference in the finish and durability of something.”
Jess explained their style to interiors brand Ruggable, adding:[It’s] It's really a mix of things.
“We take a lot of inspiration from the earthy color palette of the 70s and love natural materials like wood.
“We like to combine these with more contemporary fixtures and fittings to create a cohesive, unified space.”
