Kitchen tiles, like all tiles, are subject to trends. Recent years have seen the introduction of metro tiles, finger tiles, and Zellige. And now actor Zooey Deschanel is leading the charge on what we, and designers think, will be big in 2024.
Zooey's take on this patterned kitchen trend is part of a broader movement to add personality to as many areas of the home as possible. From stripes on deck chairs to tropical prints, prints are heavy on the work of designers as diverse as Jake Arnold (who loves the grid on his living room walls) and Jonathan Adler (who incorporates geometric patterns into his rugs). You can see it being incorporated.
The 'New Girl and Elf' star posted on Instagram with 'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' star Crystal Kung Minkoff, showing her 7.7 million followers how to make dumplings, but it caught the eye. It wasn't just recipe designers who did it.
The modern kitchen that serves as the backdrop for Zooey's cooking reel, which has garnered over 20,000 likes, is a clear departure from the standard subway-style tile and is surrounded by rectangular cream-colored rustic tiles. We found that it favors mosaic-style patterned tiles in tones of blue and green.
Designer Hema Persad of Los Angeles' Sagrada Studio says that while subway tiles are a classic style, they don't add as much personality to a space as tiles like Zooey. “Tile is a fun and low-maintenance way to add personality to a space,” says Persad. “They also highlight the inspiration you're working with (midcentury, Spanish, etc.).”

It's this element of artistic experimentation that makes Zooey tiles so fun. Artem Kropovinsky, founder of the Arsight design studio, reminds us that “using patterned tiles can really change the feel of your kitchen.” More than just a backdrop, it becomes an attractive centerpiece or talking point. ”
Of course, tiles like Zooey also have practical value. As a tile that features beautiful repeating patterns and flowing colors, it has the benefit of covering stains that naturally occur in even the most unexperimental cook's kitchen. “It hides food and oil stains and is easy to clean,” says Persad. According to designers, there are several factors to consider if you're considering replacing your subway tile with a patterned style. This is especially true in kitchens, which already have a lot of color, texture, and pattern. You don't want your new tile to take up too much space or make it look cluttered. To avoid this, Julia Longchamp, principal at Julia Longchamp Design on Maryland's Eastern Shore, says to “maintain a consistent color palette that blends with the rest of your home's design.” I advise. Zooey's kitchen is therefore a triumph of design. The patterned tiles are perfectly offset by the subdued cabinetry and neutral marble countertops.
Balance is key when adding patterned tiles. As Kropovinsky points out, “If your tiles have a bright pattern, it's wise to pair them with more subdued decorative elements.” Conversely, if the rest of your kitchen has a vibrant theme, , a discreet tile pattern may be a better choice. ”

To achieve the relaxed country-contemporary feel of Zooey's kitchen, follow Persad's simple advice on scale and practicality. “Large tiles are best for floors, and smaller tiles are good for backsplashes.” And never use tiles for countertops. It is not sanitary as food and bacteria can become trapped in the grout lines. ”
If you're redecorating your kitchen, start by choosing your tiles. Zooey's kitchen shows that you can add a lot visually to a space, especially when other, more neutral furniture pieces work in perfect harmony.
