The new Kitchen Trends Report, published by B&Q in partnership with Pinterest, analyzes what UK users search for and save on Pinterest over the past year. But what did they discover? See key insights below.
1. Unicorn-inspired design
In 2017, unicorns were a big topic – indeed, printed images of the mythical creatures were seen all over accessories, electronics and home decor – but the report found that “consumption Unicorns could also be here to stay in British kitchens, as people tend to seek out 'inclinations to life in a more subtle way.
But how exactly? On Pinterest, pastel hues, bright whites, and gold accents led to a 234 percent jump in searches and saves for “pink kitchen accessories,” and a 120 percent increase in “pink paint.” “White cabinets” and “gold kitchen accessories” rose by 262% and 235%, respectively.
Mike Lavers, B&Q's kitchen market manager, says: “The hugely popular unicorn trend is making its way into the kitchen.” “Brits are embracing this theme and turning to accessories such as glitter paint, glossy tiles and colored glass tealights to add even more sparkle. 2. Moroccan feel
Traditional Moroccan patterns and intricate designs are the finishing touches you need to make your kitchen stand out. 3. Return to nature
More and more consumers are considering the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions, and this is reflected in the design of their kitchens. Thanks to consumers taking a stand for sustainability, searches and savings for “eco kitchen” have increased by 164 percent, and “plywood” has increased by 139 percent.
Achieving an “eco look” seems to be becoming a desirable aesthetic. Searches and saves for “organic materials” increased by 139%, with consumers considering natural materials for worktops and cupboards. Our trends report points to the emergence of distinctive veneers such as pippy elm and walnut, while B&Q sees a surge in sales of walnut worktops, concrete tiles and bamboo lighting. It's clear.
4. Metallic touch
No wonder this list includes metallics. As a continuing trend, metallics continue to grow in popularity as kitchens take on an ultra-modern and luxurious feel. This includes sparkling ceramic wall tiles, stylish statement lighting, and big statement pieces like glitter paint and metallic plug sockets.
On Pinterest, searches and saves for “gold kitchen accessories” have increased by 235 percent, “gold cabinet handles” by 187 percent, and “gold taps” by 59 percent.
