When I graduated from The New School and started doing TikTok full time, I was living in a small flex room in an apartment that was just bursting at the seams. I looked for a new place for months and then this random unit came up for sale in New York's Tribeca area. That photo was the worst possible photo, including disgusting. But I had a very good feeling about it. So I went and looked at it and realized how huge the space was and most importantly it was perfect for me and everything I have planned. Ta.
I wanted my apartment to look like this. icarly—I love the crazy maximalism of that show. When I was a kid, my parents always rented and we moved around a lot. So we didn't move out completely until I was 17 years old and my parents found the house they live in now. As a kid, I was a really eclectic person and dreamed of super livable spaces that I had never lived in before. So in this place, even if I lost my deposit, I wanted to create something of my own.
I loved the size of my new room, but I hated the kitchen. I started thinking about what I could do to be more like myself. The cabinet was made of composite material covered with a thick, hard white plastic wrap type sealant. I was hoping to repaint it, but you can't paint over hard plastic. I did some research and found that if I take my Dyson hair dryer to the edge, it will start pulling on the sealant and I can strip it all off. The cabinets weren't real wood so I had to get a special white paint sealer and repaint them green. This whole process took about two weeks. Inspired by Colorful Kimmes, peel and stick backsplash purchased on Amazon (funnily enough, my TikTok about this has 2.2 million views and the sticker is sold out so I can't replace it right now) and floor decal Also added. To cover the gray tile floor.
This may surprise you, but the name of the background paint I used on the cabinets is “Pretty Ugly.” I was originally going to buy a Dakota Johnson style shade, but at first I thought, “This is a little bright.” But did you know? wrong. cool. But everyone who follows me thought it was a joke. They said: I don't like this. Who wants to see this every day? What are you doing in this apartment? you're ruining it. ” Many people on Twitter and Reddit were angry about this. Of all the things I did online, it was actually these green cabinets that caused the most reactions. And I said: “You don't understand the vision. It's all coming together!”
Even though there was some backlash, it didn't bother me at all. Most of what I do isn't for everyone, and I never expected it to be for everyone. I never expected that people would create literal Facebook hate pages and it would become a whole discourse. I thought, damn, this really caused a lot of negative reactions.
So when you're pushing the boundaries or on the cutting edge, you're doing something different. Different doesn't necessarily mean good, and it doesn't necessarily mean bad. It's just that it's different. And I have never been discouraged by being different. And I didn't want people to like my space, mainly because that's what I wanted. myself— and most people don't have the same style as me.
But I never thought people would hate me. So To be honest. I thought it was really cute. I also think it didn't make sense because it was the first thing I did to my apartment and I didn't do anything else. But now that all the other parts of the house are finished, it's really coming together nicely. Many people now think, “I get it.'' But there are still many people who think the kitchen is the worst. Even though there were so many other things I wanted to do, it ended up being perfect. And that makes me happy.
