If you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, don't hesitate to think of it as your “you” zone. Pack your favorite colors, scented candles, pot holders and dish towels that make you smile, or sponges that make you smile. want to wash the dishes.
When homeowner Leah Hodson (@thestanleydiary) moved into her home during the coronavirus lockdown in her third trimester, she “desperately needed to make the kitchen more comfortable.” I'll tell you. [her] A space of your own. ' But at first, it didn't seem to fit her style at all.
“The kitchen reminded me of the kitchen in my university hall, so I decided to get rid of it as soon as possible,” she says. “I liked the size and layout of the kitchen. I didn't like everything else, especially the color of the walls. The blue walls… clashed with the wood-grain vinyl.”
First on Leah's bucket list was the floor. “They were foul,” she says. So she started by retiling, and from there the kitchen renovation began.
Vinyl tiles add pattern.
Leah floor tiles are vinyl tiles for renters sold by Amazon. “I'm often asked if that's the case. [ceramic] It's tile, but it's not! ” says Leah. “Vinyl tile is so easy to install and looks so good!”
Leah said she and her husband chose vinyl material “because we weren't sure it would stand up to the challenge of installing new flooring.” The main takeaway she got from this her first DIY is that she doesn't have to use the adhesive that comes with vinyl tiles. Tile adhesive is a little safer. “We used a similar vinyl tile in a different print in the second-floor bathroom. We used tile adhesive instead of the included self-adhesive, which helped it stick to the floor better.” she explains.
The cabinet is painted black.
Leah and her husband removed all the cabinet doors, primed them, and coated them with Leyland brand paint that matched Farrow & Ball's Off Black. This was a labor of love. “It takes a surprisingly long time to prime all the doors, wait for the paint to dry, and then apply the next coat,” Leah says, but the time-consuming process is worth it. had.
“Painting the cabinets black against the white walls really makes them stand out and gives the space a more modern feel,” says Leah, adding, “Keeping the units a simple color draws attention to the geometric flooring. We will come together,” he added. Leah also said that by painting her units instead of replacing them, she saved her and her husband thousands in redecorating their kitchen. (The total cost of their project was 250 pounds, or just over $300).
Leah recommends strict use of Zinsser primer and painter's tape for DIYers looking to paint their kitchen cabinets themselves. “Tape, tape, tape,” she says.
Black cabinets go perfectly with any accessories.
Adding new hardware to the cabinets and replacing the overhead light fixtures (installed by a professional electrician) were the final steps in the kitchen project.
“I'm all about brass, so I had to remove the chrome handle and replace it with a slightly warmer brass,” Leah says. (Leah gets her pull from eBay and recommends it as a source for hardware.) “A good handle is great,” she says.
She generally loves adding fun accessories to spaces. “It's so simple that it's so much fun to style and decorate,” says Leah. “A little pop of color instantly transforms a space. I'm 100% happy with it and would happily do a black kitchen again.”
