Chattanooga resident Alice Renee Watson Kitchen, 68, received a call from God and responded on March 5, 2024.
Alice was born April 18, 1955 in Chattanooga to Willie and Lucille Watson. She was a faithful member of Joseph Chapel AME Church and served in the Stewardess Service, Missionary Society, YPD, and Hospitality Ministry. Alice graduated from Riverside High School in 1973, where she was on the yearbook staff, senior honors, and served as school representative for the WNOO radio station, which airs on Saturday mornings. After graduation, she attended Tennessee State University.
Alice married Eddie Kitchen Sr. on May 12, 1978. Shortly after their marriage, she joined Eddie in Austin, where he served in the United States Air Force. While there, Alice was employed by the Army and Air Force Exchange Office in Bergstrom, AFB. She was a devoted wife and a caring and nurturing mother to her children, Eddie and Erica. Her grandchildren, Ashley and Jordan, were her pride and joy. She was always supportive and willing to lend a helping hand to her family and friends. Alice was instrumental in organizing the Chattanooga chapter of the McClellan Family Alumni Association for the past 28 years. She was the person everyone gravitated to for direction.
In 1996, Alice was the owner and operator of Kitchens Early Childhood Development for 10 years. She loved children and had a passion for teaching, nurturing and caring for them. They often went on field trips and participated in Christmas programs and graduation ceremonies. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service, TVA, Marriott Hotels, and Westin Hotels until her retirement in 2023.
Alice's favorite sayings included “I'm a baby,” which refers to her being the youngest of nine children. She even started a conversation on her phone by saying, “Hey, sugar.” And she ends the conversation by saying, “Good luck.” Alice was much loved and she will be greatly missed. Her life was a blessing to those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her son, Eddie James Kitchen Jr., and her parents, Willie Watson and Lucille Watson. her sister Carol Stallings; her uncle Larry Watson Sr.; her mother-in-law, Susie Kitchen; her brothers-in-law, Jeffrey White, Andrew Kitchen and Charles Kitchen; nephew, Sherrod K. Mason III; her sisters-in-law, Betty Freeman, Elizabeth Kitchen, and her dear friend Connie Cato.
Her memory will be forever cherished by her devoted husband of 45 years, Eddie Kitchen Sr., her beloved daughter, Erica Janelle Kitchen, and two grandchildren, Ashley Nicole and Jordan Anthony Kitchen. right. her four brothers, Robert (Emma) Watson, Nathaniel Watson, Willie H. Watson III, and her twin brother, Johnny (Angela) Watson. three sisters, Delores (Robert) Atkins, Clara Mason, and Sandra White; all of Chattanooga, three brothers-in-law, Curtis Stallings of Chattanooga; Elder Bobby (Gloria) Kitchen, Sparta, Georgia; and Robert (Carla) Kitchen, Chattanooga, Tennessee. four sisters-in-law, Nina Kitchen, Atlanta, Ga.; Lenette (Ronald) Clark, Ooltewah, Tenn.; Angela Kitchen, Sandersville, Ga.; and Barbara Kitchen, Chattanooga. special friend, Brenda Gail Autry of Chattanooga, TN; Sylvia Wade. Kingsport, Tennessee. Drea Martin, Jasper, Tennessee; Sandy Quash, Atlanta, Georgia. Sandra Woodard, San Antonio, Texas; Laurie Roberts, Calhoun, Georgia; Joyce Kitchen, Atlanta, Georgia. Gloria Adams and Tamika Davis of Chattanooga, Tennessee; godmother Leonna Roberts, Calhoun, Georgia; Aaron A. McDaniel of San Antonio, Texas. many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A public viewing will be held at Second Mission Baptist Church, 2305 East 3rd Street, Chattanooga, on Friday, March 15th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a funeral service at noon. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
