You may have heard about propagating houseplants or germinating green onions, but did you know you can do the same with store-bought broccoli?

Simon Akeroyd (@simonakeroydgardener) is a TikToker and expert gardener who shares great tips for getting the most out of your home garden. In one popular clip, he shows viewers how to grow broccoli at the grocery store.
It's a fairly intuitive process if you're used to propagating, but as Akeroid writes in the caption, “This is one of the most difficult vegetables to grow.” Still, he says, “I can do it.”
@simonakeroydgardener Gardeners call it Calabrese and supermarkets call it broccoli. This is a video I made last year, but many of you may not have seen it yet. This is one of the more difficult vegetables to grow, but it can be grown. Please, try it. #sustainablegardening #zerowaste #vegetablegardeningforbeginners #vegetablegardening #growyourown #growyourgroceries #foryou ♬ Go Your Own Way (2004 Remaster) – Fleetwood Mac
In the TikTok video, Akeroyd walks viewers through the process. First, cut the broccoli florets and remove the bottom 2 centimeters (just under 1 inch) from the base of the stem. Then place this cut stem in a container of water and “put it on the windowsill” and wait.
After a while, new buds and leaves will appear, and if possible, small flowers will also bloom. Once your broccoli grows successfully in water, you can transfer it to soil to continue growing. You can watch the creator's hair grow from start to finish, so be prepared for this process to take some time.
How does it help?
Growing additional plants from store-bought vegetables is a great way to stretch your money. Plus, if the effort is successful, the harvest could save you even more money on trips to the grocery store.
Growing plants from scraps saves you the hassle of buying seeds and is perfect for people who don't have the space to start a garden outdoors. Plants like sprouts can be grown on counters or windowsills.
Growing food at home can save you hundreds of dollars a year. Gardening can also help reduce pressure on the food system. Many of our foods have a large carbon footprint due to their 'food miles' – the distance from farm to table.
Carbon Brief states, “The transportation of food and related equipment is necessary to sustain the current global food system, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the food system’s total emissions.” .
In addition to its environmental benefits, gardening is also a healthy pastime. Some studies have shown that people who garden are happier and get more fiber in their diet.
