Fashions come and go, but no part of the home has changed more in the past 100 years than the kitchen. Long gone are the days of waiting for the ice man and cooking on a coal stove—at least, we think so. OTTAWA — Canadian retail sales slowed in March as people shopped less at retailers selling furniture, household goods, electrical goods and appliances, Statistics Canada said Friday. The agency said retail sales fell 0.2% to $66.4 billion in March, but initial estimates for April are calling for a 0.7% increase. CIBC senior economist Catherine Judge said Canadian retail sales finished the first quarter on a weak note. “The weakening momentum through the quarter reflects consumers becoming more cautious amid rising interest rates at mortgage renewal time and is also consistent with the Bank of Canada beginning to cut interest rates in…

Recently, questions have emerged about the safety of gas stoves and the emission of toxic substances that can, in some cases, cause asthma and other health complications. Just one year ago, in May 2023, New York became the first state to pass a bill mandating that all cooking and heating utility services be electrified by 2029. A year later, a large number of electric stoves are now raising serious health and safety concerns. Last week, Electrolux announced a recall of “approximately 203,000” Kenmore and Frigidaire stoves that have been allegedly responsible for multiple fires and injuries. “Depending on the model,…

1. Herringbone floor Strengthen Herringbone wood flooring has long been a staple in luxury homes, but it's now becoming mainstream: “It was a lot of work and it used to be a luxury item, but now everyone, even their grandmother, wants beautiful herringbone in their home,” says Karp. It started out quite subtly. A quick email from my estranged brother asking for some clarification about my wedding 40 years ago. My brother and his wife had different memories; she claimed to remember being with me as I was getting ready. My brother said she wasn't there. He was right. I replied with more than a little trepidation. A few weeks later, I got another email asking if I remembered Easter when I was a little girl in my backyard in Farmingdale, New York, wearing a white dress and playing with bunnies. A little history: My brother and I…

Claire Mullen I consider myself not afraid of snakes. Am I a snake lover? Definitely not. But I've hiked remote trails, cooled off in rocky creeks, and camped in wooded areas all summer in this great snake-filled state, so I know it's almost inevitable that I'll encounter a reptile like a snake from time to time. I’ve studied and almost know by heart the “North Carolina Snakes” identification chart I have saved on my phone, and I know to avoid at all costs any limbless species with a diamond-shaped head, a row of abdominal scales, oval pupils, or a rattling…
