At this time of the New York summer, I admit to longing for an escape to the countryside. I envy the residents of small towns and hamlets where more people count birds as neighbors than people, where the yards are large and pristine, and the local waters are more swimmable than the Hudson River.
While there may be weekend escapes in the future, the reality is that I won't be leaving asphalt-filled New York for more than a few days for the time being. So, I'm embracing the country vibe whenever I can. And when it comes to the kitchen, I categorically reject anything sleek and modern. I love country kitchens: mismatched stoneware, wicker baskets, pine planks underfoot, and worn white linens. Of course, country kitchens are as diverse as those I've seen in New York. But for me, the farmhouse aesthetic is all about natural materials and no-frills fixtures. There's none of that shiny, store-bought newness that modern kitchens have. If you're yearning for the country vibe as well, here are some things you can do to bring a country feel to wherever you are.
