It's hard to argue with the timeless versatility of a black-and-white kitchen, but with all of its benefits, it's important to know how to keep this palette from becoming boring. That's where Brooke Shields comes in: She demonstrated another way to bring this classic color combination to life: in the form of white zellige kitchen tiles on the wall behind the stove.
Originating in Morocco and dating back to the 10th century, zellige tiles are usually square (like the ones seen in Shields' kitchen) but come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each tile is often made by hand, meaning each one has a different finish, and glazes allow for an endless variety of colors.
This means that its 'imperfect' finish is often a talking point, making it perfect for a black and white kitchen where interest through texture is key.
Categorizing zellige tiles as a trend may feel like a somewhat unfair label considering these tiles have been influencing interiors in one way or another for centuries, but there's no denying that zellige has seen a resurgence that began in 2021 and has only grown in recent seasons.
With support from the likes of Blake Lively (whose shower is covered in neutral zellige) and Jessica Alba (who's also incorporating zellige into her kitchen), the tile trend has already been spotted in the homes of Hollywood's elite. As in Shields' kitchen, the tiles consistently add a rustic, textured appeal. But in addition to its effect on enhancing neutral spaces and its celebrity appeal, Wisconsin-based designer Courtney Wollersheim says the zellige movement is down to its handcrafted quality.
“Zellige tiles are trending because of their artisanal, handcrafted quality, and homeowners are drawn to the variety of glazes, colours and gloss or satin finishes available. Each tile is unique, bringing a rustic, natural feel that individualises the space in which they are installed,” she comments.
Plus, zellige tile can work in more than just the kitchen: Wollersheim explains that what's unique about this style is that it can be just as impactful in the bathroom, especially the shower (looking at you, Blake Lively).
“True zellige tiles are handcrafted from clay and vary in thickness from tile to tile, giving them a rich, three-dimensional look and feel. When tiles of different tones and textures are installed together in a backsplash or shower, the overall eye-catching differences create maximum impact,” says Wollersheim.
For an even more accessible way to embrace the trend, she recommends opting for zellige-inspired ceramic tiles for the same look, “plus it adds a sense of continuity in thickness.” Similarly, you can achieve a Brooke Shields-esque look with some eye-catching accessories for your kitchen and countertops. A current favorite is her PowerXL air fryer, which is currently the best-selling version in the country, in case you needed another reason to invest in one.

Finally, looking back at Shields' tiles, we can see that zellige tiles work best and have the best visual effect when installed the traditional way, with little to no gaps. This is how the actress uses them in her kitchen, and experts also recommend it: when it's classic, there's no reason to change it.
