PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) – Catholic Charities has officially opened its soup kitchen, distributing lunches Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and bags of groceries on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are distributing it.
They serve those in need at the Mother Cabrini Center, located at 615 E. Jefferson Street near the Peoria Fire Department Center.
People who need a boxed lunch do not need to register, but they are asking everyone who needs a meal to get their own boxed lunch, as they can't give more than one boxed lunch to one person.
Catholic Charities isn't just handing out lunches, it's also providing diapers to parents in need. “We have a St. Gianna's Baby Pantry where parents and legal guardians can come and help with diapers and other baby items. If you are the legal guardian or parent of each child We ask that you bring some legal documentation with you to show that this is the case.'' John Gibson, Associate Director, Catholic Charities.
Gibson said being able to help others is rewarding. “That is our mission, that is the mission of Catholic Charities. We have been told by our bishops to continue to serve those in need, and that is what we will do.”
Catholic Charities also has a mobile soup kitchen, serving any community within the 29 Catholic dioceses. “The area of the city is going to be very important. We have high-need areas here and I think we can really support the local community with these services,” Gibson said.
