Colorful kitchen cabinets are a design secret that instantly brightens up any space. However, the choice of hue determines the overall mood of the room. Bright yellow takes a sunny approach, while deep green gives a modern, sophisticated look. We're tempted to say blue is a happy medium. Subtle and uplifting, yet inherently bespoke, this color lends itself well to a variety of kitchen design trends.
Christie Brinkley's quirky kitchen is proof of that. The supermodel recently posted a photo of herself drinking wine at a marble dining table. Behind it are stacked bookshelves, a gallery wall, and light blue-painted cabinets, creating a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.
A popular color for bedrooms and bathrooms, blue's calming properties make it perfect for those who want to create an oasis in their home. Those looking to bring a calming vibe to their kitchen can bet on blue decor to get the job done.
“Blue is famous for its ability to instill a sense of tranquility and relaxation,” says Nina Lichtenstein, founder and lead home designer of her eponymous company. Bright hues such as sky blue and aqua evoke beach and coastal vibes and are perfect for a refreshing, relaxed kitchen atmosphere. Deep blues like navy and indigo bring depth and sophistication, creating a more dramatic and cozy atmosphere. ”
Lichtenstein says a blue kitchen is all about balance, so he suggests letting painted cabinets serve as the main focal point while injecting more subtle hues into other elements.
“Balance dark blue cabinetry with light countertops and backsplashes to keep the space feeling open and airy,” she recommends. “Incorporate blue through small accents like decorative vases, tableware, and kitchen linens. Mix and match different shades of blue to create depth and visual interest.”
When styling around blue paint, you need to consider texture materials and lighting in addition to the color.
“You can enhance the calming effects of blue by incorporating natural materials such as wood or wicker furniture, woven baskets, and potted plants,” suggests Lichtenstein. “Choose light fixtures with a matte black or brass finish to complement the blue and create a cohesive look.”
We love the antique brass picture frames and marble tables on the Brinkley gallery walls. This is because it provides visual interest and contrast with the solid blue cabinets. I also can't help but scream when I see her eclectic bookshelf in the background. A reminder that the most beautiful kitchen is also the most personal.
