Haier invites you to step outside the stainless steel framework.in The IFA trade show will be held here in Berlin, the appliance manufacturer has announced a new series of refrigerators with customizable color options. When ordering a Haier Series 60 or Series 70 refrigerator, you can use the website to select your preferred color.
Many large appliances look similar apart from slight differences in the curves of the handles and logos, so a touch of color should help the Chinese company's refrigerators stand out as unique statements.
Other major manufacturers are also taking small steps to differentiate themselves. LG offers a black stainless finish, and GE (recently acquired by Haier) offers a slate finish. Smeg is the only one that offers a real variety. And since Haier promises a “virtually unlimited” color palette to choose from, there should be even more options than the design-centric Smeg's retro style.
In addition to customizable colors, Haier introduced several other refrigerator innovations at the Berlin trade show, including newer technology and an easy-access freezer drawer. Neither of these announcements is as noticeable as the color. Almost all the refrigerators we review boast breakthrough technology that keeps food fresher for longer.
Haier has not yet announced the price or availability of the color-centric refrigerators. I expect it to launch in Europe first, but given Haier's acquisition of GE, there's reason to expect color refrigerators to arrive in the U.S. before too long.
