Con Edison urged residents of Hell's Kitchen and surrounding areas to conserve energy while crews work to repair equipment. The company has reduced voltage in the area by 8 percent to protect equipment and maintain service during repairs.
The affected area stretches from West 58th Street on the north, West 42nd Street on the south, 10th Avenue on the east and the Hudson River on the west. The area includes 11,300 customers in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood.
Con Edison is advising customers in these areas to avoid using energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers and microwaves until repairs are completed. It also recommends limiting unnecessary use of air conditioners. If a home has more than one air conditioner, it recommends using only one and setting it to the most comfortable temperature.
In addition to Hell's Kitchen, brownouts were also implemented in the Theater District, Midtown and Times Square areas.

The company said in a statement that the equipment issues in those areas are isolated and are not affecting other parts of the Con Edison system, and that the company is in contact with the New York City Office of Emergency Management to coordinate its response.
