The kitchen of a home on Grover Street was damaged Tuesday night, according to the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department.
Police Chief Jason Patrick said residents of the home in the 1900 block managed to get out of the home safely.
Firefighters were called to a kitchen fire around 8:30 p.m.
Fire was seen coming from the rear of the home, and the resident told firefighters the fire was near the kitchen.
Patrick said the fire appears to have started in a stove.
Firefighters quickly rushed to the scene and doused the fire.
The remainder of the home sustained heat and smoke damage. “The quick action of the on-duty C-shift firefighters helped contain the flames and stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the home,” Patrick said.
The American Red Cross was called in to help the residents and firefighters conducted an extensive search of the scene for about two hours. “I would just like to remind everyone to keep an eye on their food while it's cooking,” Patrick said.
Fourteen off-duty firefighters were called in to help.
Halifax County EMS, Roanoke Rapids Public Works Department and Roanoke Rapids Police Department were also on scene.
