COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A Colorado Springs family is asking for help after their dog started a fire in their kitchen.
The fire broke out on June 26 along Rushmore Drive, which is on the city's southeast side, east of S. Circle Drive and south of Highway 24. According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department, they were called to the scene at about 4:43 a.m. and arrived on scene four minutes later.
“Upon investigation, crews did not find any fire, but did find evidence of fire in the cardboard above the stove,” CSFD spokesperson Ashley Franco wrote to 11News. “The male homeowner was transported to a local hospital with smoke inhalation.”
The man, who was taken away in an ambulance, told 11 News his dog started the fire. He said he put it out himself before firefighters arrived. Security camera footage shows the dog jumping up to the stove and lighting the burner. The footage also shows the burner getting hot, igniting a nearby cardboard box. The family told 11 News their insurance company is helping with repairs, but they must evacuate the home for the time being. A family member has set up a GoFundMe to help cover immediate expenses.
“Hi, I'm Brittany's mom,” the mother of one of the homeowners wrote on the GoFundMe page. “My daughter's house caught fire last night and caused significant damage. The entire second floor of her house is uninhabitable. We need help financially as she is trapped in her home. Also, her dog and other animals have been displaced. Please help in any way you can. God bless you all!”
