Knife storage can be a tricky proposition: should you display them openly or hide them in a drawer? It all depends on the size of your kitchen. While it's nice to show off a particularly impressive knife set, hanging your sharp utensils on metal strips is also a great way to save counter or cabinet space.
Drew Barrymore is on the Wallace wavelength, recently sharing a video of her beloved turquoise kitchen. The Drew Barrymore Show A metal strip hangs above the host's oven, housing an array of knives and scissors, and the combination of easy access and simple display is enough to make you rethink the best knife storage solution for your kitchen.
Experts say knife storage goes hand in hand with overall organization and should be seen as a fun challenge rather than a household stressor, explains Christina Lee, co-founder of Graceful Spaces Organizing.
“When it comes to kitchen organization, it's important to get creative with storage, especially if you have limited space,” she explains. “Luckily, there are a variety of organizational solutions available these days that are both functional and beautiful and can help you make the most of the space you have.”
Lee explains that where you store your knives will largely depend on the existing design of your space, such as whether you have plenty of countertop space or exposed walls.
“Before you rush out to the store to buy products, determine where it makes the most sense to store your knives,” says Lee. “Whether it's on the counter or in a drawer, take a few minutes to evaluate how often you use your knives, whether your dominant hand requires you to store them to the right or left of the stove (yes, this matters!), and overall where it makes the most sense to place this zone.”
This product is made from durable maple wood and comes with two magnetic strips that can hold a variety of knives, tools, and gadgets.
She continues: “For some people, storing it right next to the stove makes the most sense. [putting them] “Maybe a kitchen island drawer is the best place to store them. Also, take some time to evaluate your inventory. Get rid of anything you don't use. This first step will help you determine your product needs.”
There are certain brands and products that Lee endorses, and the materials range from bamboo and wood to shiny metals like Barrymore wall strips.
“If you plan on storing knives on your counter, I highly recommend purchasing the Material knife stand set,” she says. “At Graceful Space, we continue to purchase this brand for our clients because their premium sets are high quality and beautiful. Williams Sonoma also has great options that allow you to beautifully display your knives on your countertop.”
“Are you short on space? Walls and inside cabinets are at a premium! Free up space with a magnetic knife holder. We love having our clients use the Wooden Magnetic Holder Bar from Crate & Barrel.”

This piece offers another way to display our knives, and we love how the classic unpainted style complements any style kitchen.
In small kitchens or those with limited storage space, we recommend a metal wall strip for kitchen knives: arrange the knives along the strip from largest to smallest for a beautiful look.
