September is one of my favorite months of the year. It's finally time to start moving towards autumn. The weather is getting a little cooler, the leaves are starting to change color, and two big things happened in September. For my brother's birthday, I had the amazing opportunity to fly in the back of a US Navy Blue Angels fighter jet. September is also the time to start putting up fall decorations and harvest decorations.
I buy my fall decor from a variety of places, including HomeGoods and Kirkland. Of course, keep an eye out for local businesses. Pumpkin patches aren't open yet in the Dallas area, so we're waiting for real pumpkins to add to our decorations. Plus, this weekend is the perfect time to stock up because Kirkland is having his 30% off sitewide sale using the code “DECORATE.” I picked up some pieces from there earlier this week.
create a centerpiece
This is the first centerpiece I've ever done in my life and I have to admit it was a bit daunting at first, but it was pretty easy. However, I quickly realized that I needed a lot of items with different textures and different heights. All my highlights are from HomeGoods! I love the idea of mixing different pumpkin textures, so I wanted to avoid too much orange pumpkin. This navy velvet one immediately caught my eye and sits atop a giant candle.
I got a potpourri bag with pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and a few fall leaves to fill the brood bed. I put some in glass jars and the rest just filled space between my copper French press, bags of ground coffee, and adorable mugs. Adding some pine cones, pumpkins, and candles is an easy way to create a centerpiece. Add some fall prints if you like and you're good to go.
hang a wreath
Wreaths aren't just for Christmas! I love the neutral tones of this wreath. It has a velvet pumpkin and pine cone with some pearl beads. After experimenting with different places to wrap it, I finally decided to hang it. I wanted to hang it over the countertop and microwave, but decided it would make a better statement if it was over the sink.
Before you go overboard, think about your fall decor color scheme and stick with it. Sure, there are pops of color, but don't use too many colors or your items won't look cohesive. Sometimes simple is best! One of the things we love about this wreath is that it could theoretically work well into late fall and winter. Pearl beads and cream velvet go well with Christmas decorations.
Get a festive mug
At my house, we often drink coffee, tea, golden milk, and hot cocoa. Mugs are a staple and I love the tiled monogram mugs, but festive mugs are always so fun. I love this burnt orange color and I think it's so cute that he has two words on it: “Hello Pumpkin” and “Everything Pumpkin Spice.” Plus, the mug I bought at HomeGoods had the exact same truck on it that I found at Kirkland's, so what's new?! As soon as I saw the actual truck display, I bought it to go with the mug. I thought it was necessary. Remember, he's having a 30% off sale at Kirkland and these mugs are included.
