Syracuse, N.Y. — A kitchen fire damaged their home in Syracuse on Sunday, forcing a family to evacuate.
According to an Onondaga County 911 call, firefighters responded to the 100 block of Chatham Place at approximately 8:12 p.m. for a possible kitchen fire.
A 911 caller told dispatchers the fire was in the kitchen and that flames had spread near the back door, dispatchers said.
Syracuse Fire Department spokesman District Chief Matt Cranor said thick smoke was visible several blocks away as firefighters approached the home.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they saw heavy flames and smoke on the second floor of the one-and-a-half-story home.
Cranor said when firefighters entered the home to search for the occupants, they were met with flames, high heat and blinding smoke.
Firefighters had most of the blaze under control within 20 minutes, and had collapsed parts of the ceiling and walls to stop the fire from spreading into hidden spaces, Cranor said.
Cranor said the fire was under control within 40 minutes.
Firefighters remained on scene as of 9:45 p.m., checking the area for hot spots and dehumidifying areas where the fire was reported. Cranor said the home sustained extensive damage to the rear of the first and second floors.
There were no reports of injuries, Klarner said. A mother and her three young children heard the warning through a fire alarm and escaped the home unharmed.
After the fire, the American Red Cross responded to the scene and provided assistance to the family.
Klarner said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
