Some mornings, steaming coffee, crispy bacon and a pile of pancakes are the only things that get us out of bed. Breakfast is a universal ritual that's beautiful in its simplicity. And now three new local spots are charming locals and tourists alike with their own unique take on the breakfast essential.
Morning News
A breakfast joint from the brilliant minds at Herbs & Rye? Check it out! Buzz about this new Sahara Avenue gem started building last fall, and ever since, getting on the Morning News has been like sneaking into Buckingham Palace. You'll have to get on a waiting list, but once you've tasted the food, you'll want to tell the world.
Morning News' aesthetic is understated, but its personality really shines through in its menu, which features cute cartoon characters of waffles and lovably bucktoothed eggs. Bananas Foster's pancakes ($15) are drizzled with Nutella and caramel and served with banana compote. Cherry cheesecake ($14) is stuffed with cheesecake chunks. Churros ($15) are an indulgent, over-the-top affair: caramel-filled churros dusted with cinnamon sugar and topped with a waffle cone of vanilla ice cream.
Prefer something savory? Try the Morning News pork belly ($18) and honey ham ($15) Benedict smothered in hollandaise sauce or a breakfast sandwich piled high with sausage. But early risers, beware: classics like chorizo poutine ($16) and panko roll moco ($16), a beautiful dish of Spam and rice smothered in a thick layer of beef gravy, may lull you back to bed. 3154 W. Early risers
The southwest corner of the city has seen a recent proliferation of restaurants, and thanks to the visionaries behind La Neta and Juliet Cocktail Room, Early Birds has been drawing in an insatiable crowd since it opened in March. The surprisingly bright dining room features a faux skylight, green-and-gold accent wallpaper, lush greenery, and retro Saturday morning cartoons playing on the TV, making the space as Instagrammable as the food.
The drinks menu is a cocktail lover's dream, with Italian, Spanish and Irish spiked coffees on offer for those wanting a brunch-style caffeine kick to go with their cocktail.
Early Bird's pancakes are already creating a buzz, and we're eager to try the Lemon Poppy ($15), which features two thick slices of perfectly baked batter topped with lemon poppy seeds and blueberries. And with the release of Season 3 fast approaching, bearorder the show-inspired French omelette ($17): a fluffy layer of egg smothered in smooth herbed cheese and topped with crunchy potato chips and chives. 5025 Blue Diamond Rd., 702-473-0362, earlybirdseat.com. Mon-Fri, 7am-2pm, Sat & Sun, 7am-3pm –GR
Custom-made kitchen All-day cafe
What happens when a popular ramen restaurant expands into breakfast? A hit like Bespoke Kitchen is on the way. The founders of Tomi Ramen opened a cafe early last year, and it's set in the same plaza as Tomi Ramen, making it a great place for foodies to stop by. There's often a queue outside on weekends, so it's best to grab a seat early.
Unlike Tomi's compact, vertical interior design, Bespoke exudes a spacious, natural feel, with beautiful plants seemingly growing out of every nook and cranny. You'll love this place on your Instagram feed, but you'll need to savour it before you post.
Bespoke's signature croffles ($10) are a cross between a croissant and a waffle and should be the first thing you order at the table; each variation features fresh fruit and a dollop of whipped mascarpone cream for a sweet finish. Next up is the Bespoke Breakfast Board ($29), a delicious mix of baby pancakes, waffles, sausage and bacon. Tomi's influence becomes even more apparent when you get to the bulgogi eggs Benedict ($15) and corn hash char siu ($15), the perfect texture of braised pork, rice and fried egg. Glad you didn't hit the snooze button! 2600 W. Sahara Ave. #101, 725-278-8464, bespokealldaycafelv.com. Monday-Friday, 7:45am-3pm, Saturday and Sunday, 7:45am-5pm.-As
