A Fort Dodge man managed to put out a fire burning in his kitchen, but the incident Saturday morning left his apartment uninhabitable.
The man escaped injury, Fire Chief Steve Teske said.
The fire at 21½ N. 14th St. was reported at 9:54 a.m. Saturday.
Teske said the man had been cooking in his basement apartment and had a dish with a dish towel on it next to the hot part of the stove. When the man left the kitchen for a moment, the towel caught fire. He returned to the kitchen and began pouring water from the sink over the fire.
“He stopped a lot of things.” Teske said.
Firefighters used pressurized water extinguishers to extinguish the remaining flames, but the damage caused by the fire was extensive.
“The kitchen is broken” Teske said.
The apartment is located in the basement of a home owned by Becker Real Estate in Fort Dodge.
