YPSILANTI, MI — Five people were evacuated after a fire broke out at a home in Ypsilanti on Saturday.
Ypsilanti Fire Department members were called to the 500 block of North Hamilton Street in Ypsilanti shortly before 6 p.m. on May 18 for a report of a fire on the first floor of a residence, according to Capt. Jeff Schultz. Ta.
At the time, two of the five residents were living in the house, which is divided into multiple apartments. Both were able to evacuate on their own, Schultz said.
When crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the building, Schultz said.
The fire is under investigation, but authorities believe it started in the kitchen, Schultz said. There was fire and smoke damage on the first floor. There was no damage to the second floor.
Fire departments from Ypsilanti, Pittsfield and Superior Township assisted in the rescue, and crews cleared the scene around 7:30 p.m.
