Washington and Lee University’s (CKWL) Campus Kitchen has received $2,300 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation.
The grant will support the Campus Kitchen Backpack program’s continued efforts to provide food to neighbors in need and support families in Rockbridge County.
“With more families turning to food agencies locally and across the country, it's more important than ever to continue programs like the Backpack Program to supplement food costs for local families with school-age children,” said CKWL Coordinator Ryan Brink. “We're pleased that Food Lion Feed Foundation continues to support the Campus Kitchen Backpack Program as we strive to meet the needs of our community.”
The Food Lion Feed Charitable Foundation is committed to helping families facing food insecurity, and their “Feed the Hungry” grants help increase access to nutritious food and nutrition education in the communities they serve. The Foundation has awarded more than $18.9 million in grants to date.
Established in 2009 to address food insecurity experienced by children receiving free and reduced lunches in schools throughout Rockbridge County, the Campus Kitchen Backpack program provides weekly packages of non-perishable breakfasts, lunches and snacks to children enrolled in area schools. Funds from the Food Lion Feed Charitable Foundation help purchase food for the program, which delivers 650 backpacks each week to preschool, elementary and middle school students in local school districts.
