We all know that restaurants use a ton of ingredients to prepare their dishes, but we also know that not all of those ingredients end up on the table in front of diners. An app available in Detroit this week aims to reduce food waste and deliver unused food and ingredients at a discount. The app is called “Too Good To Go,” and Katy Knoer, owner of Give Thanks Bakery, appeared on “Live In The D” to talk about why they partnered with the app and how it works.
The app is very easy to use: You choose the restaurant you want to buy from and choose your surprise bag. The bag is then available to pick up at a specific time slot at the end of the day. It's called a surprise bag because the same items aren't always available. “It's good for restaurants,” Noah says. “It allows them to easily evaluate what's left at the end of the day and make it available to the public at an affordable price.”
Noah shared examples of what surprise bags with Too Good To Go will look like depending on what's left over: Inside the bags were cranberry and walnut sourdough bread, a large Bavarian pretzel and an almond croissant.
“We're really committed to being zero-waste, and that's really hard to achieve,” Noer says, “but this is really special because it increases the accessibility of the finished product.”
