Today, July 18, is World Emoji Day. To mark the occasion, Google has announced the expansion of its Emoji Kitchen platform. Emoji Kitchen, which was first released on Android devices in 2020, lets you create mashups of different emoji characters. Now, Google is integrating the feature into its search engine. But that's not all: YouTube Shorts will also be getting an Emoji Kitchen update soon. Read on to find out more.
You can now create new emojis in Google Search
Emoji Kitchen is now available on Google Search. You can access it from your Chrome browser. It is also available on other browsers, as you only need the Google search engine to activate the kitchen. Just search for “Emoji Kitchen” Let's start cooking Click the button just below the search bar. Select the two emojis you want to combine and the results will appear instantly.
Tap Randomization If you're feeling adventurous, tap a button and your kitchen will automatically combine two emojis for you. You can copy and paste the emojis anywhere. Tell your loved ones where the emojis come from so they can try them out for themselves. I've tried so many combinations, from robot pumpkins to pig mermaids. It's amazing how there's no limit to what you can combine. When you run out of ideas, explore You can see some interesting pieces and the combinations that inspired them.
Of course, the Emoji Kitchen feature isn't new and is already present in the Gboard keyboard, but with limited combinations. Google added more options in early May, so it's possible that they'll bring this extension to their keyboard.
Unicode Consortium introduces new emojis
It's not just searchers who can enjoy this perk: YouTube Shorts users will soon be able to create custom emojis to make their videos more animated. A preview video shows them combining random emojis by freezing them with their head movements.
The Unicode Consortium, the body that standardizes emojis, has also approved the new emojis, which are expected to be rolled out to various platforms, including Google, in the coming days. The Unicode 16.0 update will add seven new emojis: fingerprint, leafless tree, harp, splat, face with bags under the eyes, shovel, and root vegetable.
It can take a year or two for an emoji to go from idea to appear on your keyboard. And once an emoji becomes part of the Unicode standard, it can't be removed. That's why we have high standards for emoji adoption. The Emoji Subcommittee works with experts from around the world to identify common ways we've expressed ourselves historically in literature, film, media, and pop culture.
The new emojis will officially come to Android in 2025
The new emojis will be available on websites as a black or white font starting in September 2024. Google already has its own emoji font, called “Noto Emoji,” which you can download for free and use on your website or personal projects.
Expect the new emoji to arrive on Android devices and across a range of Google products by March 2025. In the meantime, you can celebrate World Emoji Day with wallpapers from Emoji Workshop, and send tons of emojis to your loved ones in text messages and on social media.
