Health education kitchen program
Making healthy food choices is the number one thing you can do for your health. Learning how to cook is an important step to putting healthier food on your table. The Healthy Teaching Kitchen (HTK) program provides veterans with nutritional knowledge, cooking skills, and guided practices to build confidence in cooking at home using healthy, minimally processed foods. Offers.
Veterans Affairs facilities across the country offer Healthy Teaching Kitchen (HTK) programs that teach veterans and their supporters about eating, nutrition, and how to prepare and preserve balanced, healthy meals. Classes are open to VA-enrolled veterans and, if desired, “plus-ones,” meaning partners, family members, caretakers, or anyone else who helps purchase prepared food. HTK classes are taught in person at your local VA or online through the VA Video Connect (VVC) platform, and range from demonstration formats to hands-on and cook-along participation. Classes include nutrition education and discussion about different nutrients, dietary balance, grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking skills, and more. This class also provides easy, quick, and delicious recipes to support your health journey. Many of his HTKs also include disease-specific options, such as carbohydrate management cooking for diabetes, heart health support, and anti-inflammatory cooking.
