HELL'S KITCHEN, Manhattan (WABC) — A church in Hell's Kitchen continues its mission to give back in a unique way by helping to fight food insecurity in the city with a thriving rooftop farm.
Metro Baptist Church, located at West 40th Street and Ninth Avenue, has a 4,000-square-foot rooftop garden that continues to grow fresh produce to be distributed to those in need through the Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries food pantry. I am.
The Hell's Kitchen Farm Project is in its 16th year.
“This is a great way to address food insecurity and make healthy food available to people who can't buy it at regular grocery stores,” said Metro Baptist Church Executive Director and Pastor Tiffany Triplett Henkel. That's one,” he said.
The garden produces approximately 500 pounds of fresh produce annually, serving approximately 300 families.
“This is a different kind of meditative experience than farming in a wide open space,” said Chrisaleen Ciro, justice coordinator for the Rauschenbusch Metro Ministry Food Pantry.
Most crops aren't ready for harvest until around June, but in the meantime, the church offers an opportunity every other Saturday for people to come and have some fun or help with the gardening.
“Coriander, other types of herbs, bok choy, all of that grows really well here,” Ciro said. “It also allows us to provide culturally acceptable dietary options to many of our clients who are not necessarily English speakers.”
As the garden grows each week, the food pantry makes weekly distributions.
