GREELEY, Colo. — After severe weather caused major flood damage last week, a Greeley church dedicated to serving the community is in need of its own help.
Most of the water from last Tuesday's storm hit Greeley Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that operates inside Crossroads Church.
“I couldn't believe it. I was like, there's a river here, there's a lake here, and all I was thinking was, 'Oh my God, what am I going to do now,'” said Alice Nava of Greeley Kitchen.
Nava said their team meets twice a week to feed about 50 to 80 people per day.
“Like I say, we don't just fill our stomachs, we fill our hearts and we help people by giving them everything they need, like food to get home, diapers, some clothes,” Nava said.
Those efforts were affected as the dining room and kitchen were severely flooded.
“We can't offer service here until we're completely, 100 percent clean,” Nava said.
Work is currently underway to clean up the larger mess and replenish some of the damaged items, such as food, paper plates and other supplies. Volunteers are also needed to help move larger furniture so the area can be deep cleaned.
“We have to take everything out of here, deep clean the walls and floors, clean each piece, dry it out and put it back,” Nava added.
She said this will take a lot of time and help, so she hopes the community will lend a hand during her recovery.
““We're so grateful to Channel 7 for coming and making this show for us. It means a lot to us and hopefully it reaches a lot of people in the community,” Nava said.
Nava said they're still feeding the hungry, but they have to do it outside.
