Three months after El Jefe closed at 1214 Commerce St., Honour Bar and Kitchen has officially taken its place, but it's still owned by the same Parry Restaurant Group.
Parry Restaurant Group regional director Michael Nevarez said the new space will offer a modern, sophisticated dining experience that caters to the changing tastes of the local community.
Honour Bar and Kitchen opened last weekend and has expanded its opening hours to be open Monday to Thursday from 11.30am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11.30am to late, and is closed on Sundays.
The transition from El Jefe to Honour Bar and Kitchen was swift, taking just 11 weeks to transform the space into a chic, modern venue.
“It was unfortunate when El Jefe closed,” Nevarez said. “We had some issues and had to make some quick changes. But we were able to rehire nine former El Jefe employees.”

The new restaurant has a modern décor that removes many vestiges of the Mexican-themed interior.
Nevarez said the restaurant exudes a sophisticated yet intimate atmosphere with contemporary artwork, elegant lighting and a stylish outdoor patio, and the simple menu features modern American fare like shareable plates, salads and sandwiches, as well as a great selection of cocktails, wines and beers.
“Our goal was to create a fine, sophisticated, adult restaurant,” Nevarez says, “and offer a modern American concept with a contemporary twist on familiar dishes. This will be a great place for locals and neighbors to visit on a regular basis.”
As for the restaurant's unusual spelling, Nevarez said Parry's parents are from England, so it's the English spelling.
“It's an honor to continue serving Lynchburg,” Nevarez said.
Honor Bar and Kitchen aims to serve the local community, including nearby loft dwellers, business associates and couples looking for a date spot. Nevarez said the restaurant plans to offer live music on its patio in the future.
“We want it to be an event where people can sit down, share a dish, and enjoy wine and drinks with friends,” Nevarez said. “We're focused on creating an adult-friendly atmosphere, but we're not kid-shy — we just don't have high chairs or boosters, but we welcome families as long as the kids can sit comfortably at the table.”
Honor Bar and Kitchen also plans to introduce a happy hour.
