When asked to choose one timeless kitchen application, designers always give the same answer: white. The timeless appeal of this versatile hue needs no explanation, but in all its beauty, the question remains: how to maintain its appeal. Here, we look to Kelly Rowland for inspiration.
The Destiny's Child singer decked out her Sherman Oaks kitchen in a bright white color palette with matte cabinetry, subway tile backsplash, and a striped marble island — the latter of which is (arguably) the space's most striking feature.
Despite the room being predominantly one colour (white), it doesn't feel inorganic, cold or boring – instead, Roland keeps it contemporary by using the Material Method decorating technique, which kitchen design expert William Durant uses in his own projects.
“Use different shades of white to create a clean and unified look. Incorporating different textures and finishes – matte, glossy and textured surfaces – can add depth and interest,” Durant says.
Mixing materials, whether it's a marble kitchen island with wooden cabinets or subway tile with glossy countertops, is a surefire way to keep a space interesting. But there are other designer-approved ways to keep an all-white kitchen stylish. Next, Durant recommends introducing contrast with a bold color.
“Incorporate bold accent colors into elements like cabinetry, the kitchen island, the backsplash, and kitchen accessories. Popular choices include vibrant hues like navy blue, black, deep red, purple, and even bright yellow,” he says. For Roland, that comes in the form of a dark, dusty blue paint on the bottom half of the island and contrasting black cabinet handles. But her natural wood floors also caught Durant's eye. He says wooden elements can be used to add even more texture to a white space.
“Incorporating natural materials like wood, stone and metal can add warmth and texture to an all-white kitchen. A wooden kitchen island, exposed ceiling beams and a stone backsplash add character and visual interest.”
As mentioned above, Roland opted for black handles and hardware to complement the predominantly white design, but Durant explains that metallic finishes also work well with this color palette.
“Consider adding metallic finishes like stainless steel, brass or copper to complement a white palette,” he says. “These accents can be incorporated into hardware, light fixtures, faucets or appliances to add a touch of luxury and sophistication.”
William Durrant has been working in the kitchen industry for almost 10 years. After studying with leading kitchen brands, his desire to control every aspect of a design project led him to set up Herringbone Kitchens. Now the owner of a UK-based kitchen company, he leads a talented creative team to design kitchens while keeping an eye on international design trends.
