ATLANTA, GA (Atlanta News First) – Howell's Kitchen & Bar on Howell Mill Road in Atlanta is attracting attention after failing a routine sanitation inspection.
The Fulton County restaurant received a failing grade of 62 points and a “U.” The report said knives stored in the kitchen had been in contact with dirty pipes, the burgers, chicken and coleslaw were at unsafe temperatures, there was a fruit fly infestation and cockroach-like bugs crawling up the walls.
Atlanta News First asked management if the restaurant has a pest problem.
“Not at all. We addressed every issue. Obviously we took it very seriously. We addressed everything the moment the preliminary score came up,” Howell manager Ryan Costello said.
And as we were preparing to leave, Atlanta News First learned the health department had just reinspected the restaurant.
“I'm sure this will be a great score for us and she says we're in great shape right now,” Costello said.
Management got it right on the re-examination, scoring a much more impressive 96 points and an “A.”
Good results in Clayton County: Cracker Barrel on Southlake Plaza Drive in Morrow recently performed very well, earning 92 points and an “A” during a routine inspection.
And Slopes Barbecue on East Crossville Road in Roswell received a 100 on its last health inspection.
“Congratulations to this week's Golden Spatula Award winner, this is his second time receiving the award,” said Adam Murphy, senior reporter at Atlanta News First.
This place has been open for 33 years. It's a local institution, and there's a reason the food is so good: everything that comes out of the kitchen is made by hand.
Menu items include a half chicken with potato salad and coleslaw, a pulled pork sandwich with onion rings and baked beans, Brunswick stew, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and macaroni and cheese, and a meat plate of brisket, ribs and green beans.
“Oh, that was good,” Murphy said.
