While both are inspired by the 1987 Scott Turow novel, this dark drama — following the journey investigating a horrific murder of an employee of Chicago’s district attorney’s office, after which one of their own is accused of the crime — takes a different approach that doesn’t necessarily follow its predecessor, with an assortment of new characters and storylines included and a real shroud of mystery surrounding who the murderer is.

Dee plays high schooler Francine “Gidget” Lawrence, who, over one impactful summer, develops a love for surfing and also finds love with a fellow surfer. Cliff Robertson and James Darren respectively costar as other iconic characters from the Gidget universe: “The Big Kahuna” and “Moondoggie.”

Best Director Oscar nominee Billy Wilder’s dark-humored 1950 drama remains one of the best movies made about Hollywood. Its mesmerizing tale is told through an out-of-work screenwriter’s (Best Actor nominee William Holden) entry into the strange world of Norma Desmond, one of the most memorable characters in cinema history. Norma is a once-popular, but now largely forgotten, silent movie actress (unforgettably portrayed by Best Actress nominee Gloria Swanson, herself a onetime star of the silent screen) who lives hidden away both in an old mansion and in her delusions of fame. Sunset Boulevard won three of the 11 Oscars for which it was nominated, including a win for the screenplay cowritten by Wilder with Charles Brackett and D.M. Marshman Jr. Costars Erich von Stroheim and Nancy Olson received nominations for their terrific supporting performances.

Unfolding over seven episodes, it presents a different story and a new set of actors in each installment, leading to a big showdown in the finale. According to Anwar, “This series explores the sci-fi supernatural genre, which is new in [the Indonesian] film industry. … I dug deep into the intriguing concept of aliens that might not be far from us. The series has distinct elements to it, and I cannot wait to present it to viewers.”

With Tokyo under siege from increased monster attacks, baseball star Ken Sato (voice of Christopher Sean) reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of Ultraman. But the titanic superhero meets his match when he is forced to adopt a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju. Sato must rise above his ego to balance work and parenthood while protecting the baby from forces bent on exploiting her for their own dark plans.

Tonight, TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz is joined by director/screenwriter Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball), who introduces two films of her choosing. Prince-Bythewood will offer commentary on each title’s cultural significance and its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories, and her own personal reflections on them. The titles she has chosen are Central Station (1998), a road drama from Brazil that was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar and also netted star Fernanda Montenegro a Best Actress nod, and Fruitvale Station (2013), a biographical drama led by Michael B. Jordan that was writer/director Ryan Coogler’s feature directorial debut. Both films are making their TCM premieres.
