Homes with large kitchens often have dead, underutilized space. This might seem like a curse, but it's actually a blessing in disguise. Need proof? Just take a look at the high-ceilinged kitchen in Jessica Chastain's Manhattan home, which happens to be for sale.
of Molly's Game Currently on the market for $7.45 million, the actor's space takes advantage of the large vertical space by neatly arranging white painted cabinets above the main glass cabinet.
Your kitchen storage strategy will depend heavily on the size of the room itself, but even if your kitchen is smaller than Chastain's, you'll likely have some “dead” or unused space that can be transformed into maximum storage space.
“Jessica Chastain's kitchen is a perfect example, where traditional cupboard storage has been maximised by expanding it to incorporate overhead space,” says Space Station storage expert Vlatka Lake. “This allows for the storage of items that aren't needed every day, such as specialist cookware or extra crockery, bringing vigour to previously dead space without cluttering up areas that are used every day.”
While Chastain's ceilings are noticeably high, Lake says you can achieve a similar look in a room with lower ceilings by using the double-cabinet method.
“This also creates the illusion of higher ceilings because the full-length doors give the illusion of more space above the counter, making the room feel larger,” Lake explains.
One of the key considerations with vertical storage is accessibility, and in the image you can see that Chastain has hung a ladder on a rail, which is reminiscent of a library or bookstore.
“This creates an elegant vibe, but may not be practical for everyone,” Lake says. “One way to ensure you can reach the space above is to have a stool that you can keep to one side and grab whenever you need it. If space is at a premium, you could even have a stool that's foldable and can easily slip into a cupboard or drawer and be easily assembled when you need it.”
