When talking about kitchen cabinets, color is often the first thing we discuss, but Jon Bon Jovi reminded us why the materials we choose can be just as impactful.
For the white kitchen, the designer opted for glass-fronted cabinets, which he praised for their “old-fashioned” aesthetic. – But it's not just about good looks: as experts explain, glass kitchen cabinets are practical and yet unique (to display your favorite possessions and kitchen essentials), and, as designers explain, they also remind us of a (somewhat) controversial decorating philosophy: “more is more.”
“For those of us who love glass-front cabinets, more seems to be more,” comments Cindy Cantley. Cantley & CompanyThe shelves in Bon Jovi's cabinets are uncluttered and minimalist in a way, but the glass fronts allow some of the dishes to stand out as the center of the space.
“Having everything visible and efficient is not only practical, it's also beautiful to look at,” Cantley said.
“Some people have the impression that glass cabinets are difficult to keep clean, but because the dishes are usually stacked, it's easy to put them back in the proper stack when you take them out of the dishwasher. This makes it easy for guests to find what they're looking for when they're in the kitchen.”
Bon Jovi paired the glass cabinets with a white wood backsplash and cedar-colored countertops to further accentuate the room's traditional old-fashioned aesthetic. But there are ways to incorporate this feature into a modern kitchen, if you choose. In the latter case, the key is to use frosted or ribbed glass doors (for a contemporary, stylish effect).
“The beauty of glass cabinetry is that it can be old-fashioned with traditional glass mullions or sleek and contemporary with frosted or ribbed glass doors,” Cantley says. “I always encourage my clients to use their china, crystal and silverware every day. What are you saving for?”
