MIDLAND, Texas — Midland Soup Kitchen (MSK) got into the Fourth of July spirit on Wednesday as they hosted U.S. Senator Kevin Sparks and his family as guest volunteers to serve meals in the kitchen for their “Patriot Day of Service.”
Attendance was large, as 207 people showed up to receive meals and meet with senators.
MSK said Independence Day is a wonderful opportunity to remember what freedom means.
“To me, the Fourth of July is a day to come together to celebrate what a blessed country we are,” MSK Administrator Nathan Ivey said, “In Midland, we get a little taste of what a blessed country we are, but it's even more so when we take pride in our country and take pride in the people that serve us, the people that we hire to make decisions on our behalf.”
NewsWest 9 spoke with Senator Sparks and asked him what the holiday means to him.
“For me, Independence Day is a celebration of what God has given us in this great country. It goes back to our families who came from Europe seeking freedom and independence for over 200 years. [we] “We celebrate the fact that in this country we have the opportunity to live out our God-given freedoms and rights,” Senator Sparks said.
For those who would like to come to MSK for a meal or to volunteer, the soup kitchen is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The soup kitchen also provides clothing and hygiene products, which are given free of charge to local residents.
