dramatic stone
“Slate makes up the majority of backsplashes,” says Nancy Epstein, founder and board chair of Artistic Tile. “They are being complemented by a renewed interest in colorful mosaics and textured stone tiles in mixed finishes.”
From dramatic veining to rich colors, “nothing beats the natural beauty of natural stone,” adds designer Whitney Ritter Gelinas. “We love pairing less-obtrusive countertops with dramatic marble and onyx.”

In the same kitchen, Mr. Parkinson added further pushback. She chose a Caesarstone slab with carved details. Parkinson is one of many designers who have used this subtle element to add depth, including Sarah Robertson, who used it in this kitchen backsplash.
counter splash
Designer Joshua Smith says of the countersplash trend, “It's been a designer tip for a while, especially in high-end designs, but using the same material for countertops and backsplashes is becoming more and more popular. It's becoming mainstream,” he says. “What I like is that it's more continuous, clean, and gives a modern element to any style.” Below are some examples of kitchen trends designed by. Melanie Milner.

With the rise of modern Art Deco, this style is also making its way into kitchens through geometric backsplashes. It adds an element of surprise while also allowing the viewer's imagination to flex. “I love staring at this and seeing all the different objects, like paper airplanes, flying dandelion florets, and robot parts being assembled,” says designer Momoko Wong. “It’s different every time!”

To refresh the New Jersey Colonial style, Toledo Geller's design team installed a new pattern kitchen backsplash, along with new counters, islands, and plumbing fixtures.
