Brighton Regional Fire Service is stressing the importance of having fire suppression systems activated following a kitchen fire at a senior living community.
Shortly before 4 a.m. Monday, crews were called to a water alarm after a fire broke out in a second-floor unit at Independence Village in Brighton Valley off Nemco Way.
Deputy Fire Chief Brian Sirianni told WHMI that two sprinklers were activated to extinguish the fire and crews removed additional smoke from the second and third floors of the building. The cause is believed to be an abandoned cooking fire.
Two crew members were treated for smoke inhalation.
Sirianni said there was some damage from sprinklers and water leaking into the lower floor from the hallway. Eight units were damaged and the evacuated residents are being temporarily relocated by the independent village.
Sirianni said officials did a great job, and that officials quickly extracted two people from the fire department before the fire department arrived on the scene, and that officials quickly realized there was an actual fire at the scene. said.
“Sprinklers save lives,” Sirianni said, emphasizing the importance of fire suppression systems, adding that this incident proves that, and was a success out of a bad situation. He said if the building had not been contained and the fire had not been contained, at least two people would have died, and possibly more.
